REPAIRS & RENOVATION GUIDE

Regrouting or waterproofing: which problem are you solving?

A tired-looking shower can invite a quick surface refresh. Before choosing a repair, separate what looks worn from what is allowing water to reach somewhere it should not.

QUICK ANSWER

Can regrouting replace waterproofing?

No. Regrouting replaces material in tile joints; it does not replace the waterproofing membrane beneath them. Moisture in another room, below the shower or after repeated surface repairs needs investigation before a method is chosen. Ask which cause the proposed work addresses, what remains in place and what is excluded.

Checklist before discussing the work

  • Record damaged grout, loose tiles, lifting silicone and visible moisture as separate observations.
  • Explain when each symptom appears and include previous repair records.
  • Ask what would change the scope if concealed damage is found.
  • Keep the written scope and the selected materials’ return-to-use instructions.
Repair boundaries to discuss before accepting a quote
Work or concernScope and limits
RegroutingReplaces material in tile joints. It does not replace the waterproofing membrane beneath the tiles.
Silicone and surface jointsA surface-joint concern needs its own assessment. The appearance of the joints does not establish the condition of concealed layers.
Concealed waterproofingMoisture beyond the shower or repeated surface-repair failure calls for investigation; it does not by itself prove that the membrane is the cause.
Plumbing and fittingsThese can need different checks from tile joints or waterproofing. An appropriate plumbing assessment may be needed.

Sources and what they cover

The checklist helps prepare an enquiry. These sources provide general information, not a diagnosis, project specification or the current instructions for the selected products.

Start with the symptom

List missing joints, loose tiles, lifting silicone and moisture outside the shower as separate observations. Include when each appeared and what has already been repaired. A clear record is more useful than labelling the entire bathroom as a waterproofing failure.

What regrouting is for

Regrouting replaces material in tile joints. It can form part of maintaining a suitable tiled surface, but it does not replace the membrane beneath it. Even a water-resistant joint product is not proof that an entire wet-area system is sound.

When the scope needs to look deeper

If moisture appears in another room, below the shower or after repeated surface repairs, request investigation of the cause. Plumbing, fittings, junctions and the underlying construction may need different checks. Avoid choosing a method solely because it avoids tile removal.

Questions for the quote

Ask what cause the proposed work addresses, which layers remain, what is excluded and what happens if concealed damage is found. Confirm the return-to-use instruction for the selected materials. Keep photos and the written scope so the intended outcome is clear.

Use this guide to prepare for a conversation. A site assessment and the selected system’s current instructions determine the work required for an individual property.

One tile replacement revealed hidden timber damage

A customer asked Ellis to replace one tile beside a bath. Opening the wall revealed decayed timber behind the tiles, changing the scope of the repair.

A clear repair quote starts with the condition beneath the tiles, as well as the finish you can see.
